The battle may have been lost but the war is far from over for Fiji's national cricketers as they turn their attention to the next stage of their hectic international calendar this year.

Fiji finished fourth overall at the ICC East Asia Pacific Div 1 Twenty20 tournament in Papua New Guinea this week.

But Cricket Fiji chief executive Jon Symonds said the side's main focus from the outset has always been the World Cricket League 6 in September and that this week was part of the preparation and build up to that tournament

"It was a invaluable experience for the players to get game time on turf wickets, measure themselves against quality international opposition and it also offers team management the opportunity to assess players in real-game pressure situations," Symonds said.

"We were able to identify areas we did well in, areas we did well in but faded when under pressure and also areas that we clearly need to work on.

The fact that we fell away in the semis and the play off matches is disappointing given that we got ourselves into very good positions in both matches. We could have, and perhaps should have, closed matches out that we ended up losing but gives us lots to build on."

Individually there were also a number of highlights.

Cricket Fiji's Player of the Year Iniasi Cakacaka was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, taking nine wickets at an average of 10.44, while US-based Mohammed Imran Khan made a successful return to the team after a six-year absence.

Cakacaka also emerged as leading run-scorer in the team, while Kitione Tavo both batted and bowled well until succumbing to an injury late in the tournament.

"Not only that, but we have seven or eight guys going to the Pacific Games who weren't in PNG," Symonds said.

"And they're going to be doing their best to get into the selection from for World League 6 so we're actually in quite a strong position at the moment as there is a lot of healthy competition for places."
