Fiio, the Chinese portable audio specialist manufacturer, has launched its latest product in India, the A5 portable headphone amplifier. Priced at Rs 8,999, the Fiio A5 is the latest in the company’s growing range of portable amplifiers meant for use with headphones, and is considered the spiritual successor to Fiio’s E12 series of portable amplifiers.

The A5 continues to use the E12A’s MUSES02 + LME49600 opamp combination. Thanks to this and other improvements in design, the A5 claims to achieve a total harmonic distortion rating of almost 0 percent (lower than the E12A’s by 33 percent) and an improved signal-to-noise ratio of 115dB. Fiio also states that the A5 has a gain level close to that of the E12, but has improved channel balance, lower noise floor, and an improved sound on the whole.

The amplifier also has an improved level of drive, allowing it to power all kinds of headphones from sensitive low-impedance IEMs to more power hungry headphones, with a recommended impedance range of 16-300Ohms. Gain levels can be controlled through a switch, which allows either low or high gain, depending on the kind of headphones you’re using with the amplifier.

The device also has an 800mAh battery inside, which Fiio claims will keep the amplifier running for up to 13 hours on a single charge. Charging is through the micro-USB port, and the A5 weighs 168 grams. Note that the A5 does not contain a DAC, and only amplifies the sound from the source device before sending it through to the headphones. Connectivity both into and out of the A5 is through ordinary stereo cables with the 3.5mm connector plug.
