FIFA picks holes in safety measures at stadium
Almost every time the Indian Super League (ISL) moved into the city, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Kaloor has seen a sea of revelling humanity toasting every good move.
Kochi has seen some of the biggest crowds in the country for the ISL games, with attendance figures crossing 60,000 on some occasions, and during the One-Day International cricket matches, the stadium has been often packed.
But football’s world body FIFA’s strict regulations for its under-17 World Cup matches, which limit the maximum number of spectators allowed into the stadium at 41,700, bring up the question whether the lives of thousands of fans had been put at risk during the ISL and ODI matches here.
FIFA has made it clear that in an emergency, the entire stadium has to be evacuated in eight minutes flat. And that is why it has decided to use just two tiers of the three-tier Nehru Stadium for this October’s World Cup and to leave the top tier vacant, keeping away some 12,000 fans.
