While Ferrari super cars are a rare sight, it wasn’t a surprise when the Italian sports car maker announced that it would build 499 units of the new LaFerrari. And Ferrari (being Ferrari) usually sticks to its numbers. With the LaFerrari this has become an exception as the company has decided to break the norm and will build a 500th LaFerrari hybrid hypercar for a very special auction.

The announcement was made by Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne on the occasion of the bilateral summit between the Italian and German governments.

The 500th Ferrari LaFerrari will be the very last of the coupé version of the hypercar. It will be built for the sole purpose of being auctioned to benefit victims of the recent earthquake that struck central Italy and claimed hundreds of lives and leaving many homeless.

So far there is no info about what will make the car exclusive, but Autocar UK claims that it expected to carry a special plaque (one that normally sits between the two seats) to showcase its special status.

The auction of course will not be for the ready car but for the build. Those who win the build will then be able to customise the car as per their requirements, although the same has not been finalised for now. As for the price, it is expected to fetch well over the standard £1.15 million price tag.
