Facebook will be ending support for messaging inside the mobile web application, aka when you use facebook.com on a mobile web browser. Facebook already ended support for chatting/messaging on its official Android and iOS apps, forcing all users to switch to the standalone Messenger app. Now it appears that the same fate awaits the mobile website version. And this could be a big problem for some users.
As this post on Android Police points out there are advantages to not having the Facebook Messenger or Facebook app on your smartphone, with improved battery life being on the most significant one.
Now Facebook plans to shift out Messaging from the mobile website, and this means users will have to download the Messenger app in order to continue chatting.
According to TechCrunch users are getting a notification stating, “Your conversations are moving to Messenger,” indicating that the change is coming soon. But we didn’t get this message while using the chat feature in the mobile website on an iPhone 6s device.
TechCrunch points out that the change will likely take place this summer; currently users can dismiss the notification asking them to move to Messenger. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the same to TechCrunch, stating that the move to Messenger app platform will help provide the ‘best experience’ in messaging to users.
Of course as the story on TechCrunch notes, Messenger is a platform that Facebook can monetise. and thus it makes sense for the company to try and push it. Plus Messenger is where Facebook is launching its chatbots, the upcoming AI assistant called M, and will soon evolve into a spaces where users can directly engage with businesses.
Messenger will grow beyond just messaging and chats as Facebook has indicated, and so its not surprising that the company is pushing more users to download the app. Messenger is also one of the most downloaded apps on Android with over 1 billion downloads.
