After rolling out hashtags, Facebook has is now testing Trending topics on its news feed section. The section which is very similar to the trends section available on Twitter, showcases topics, including hashtags, that are currently popular on the site.
A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed the new feature, which is currently available to a small percentage of US users, and also added that further details would be given to the media if the feature is to be released widely.
The testing of this new feature highlights the emerging conflict between Facebook and Twitter to be the dominant destination for live, real-time conversations online. This brings in advantage for the winner as trends on current news events and TV shows would tend to bring in more advertisers.
Twitter has hashtags and trends features for years now and is regarded as prime source to track latest news and dominant trends and opinion. Earlier this year, Facebook too introduced hashtags.
Like Twitter, Facebook would be highlighting hashtags and trends that are popular and would be categorizing all related conversations under one relevant topic.
