73% pre-teens use FB despite 13-yr age bar
Survey conducted in big cities reveals many cases of terms and conditions' violations; though not strictly illegal, accessing sites may lead to cyber bullying, online sexual abuse.
Arecent survey by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has revealed that almost 73 per cent pre-teens are using social networking sites like Facebook despite the age bar being set at 13 years in the terms and conditions.
The survey was conducted under ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation in cities like Pune, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahmadabad, Dehradun, Lucknow etc, and included 4,200 parents with kids between 8-13 years.
"Children are accessing social media sites at a younger age which could expose them to content, people or situations that are beyond their understanding. Easy availability of technology, coupled with lack of parental supervision, is the main reason behind technology addiction," said D S Rawat, Secretary General of ASSOCHAM.
Surprisingly, a majority of kids were helped by their parents while creating profiles. However, many parents repented the decision since the child got addicted. The survey also said that using social networking sites before a specific age may lead to cyber bullying and online sexual abuse.
Dr B K Rao, Chairman of the ASSOCHAM Health Committee, said, "Kids lack the judgment to use social network and this attracts people who may abuse the child after s/he reveals identity and age, cyber bullying and online sexual abuse."
Explaining legalities, Swapnil Bangali, a professor of Cyber and IT law in Symbiosis Law school, said, "The laws are very vague so it cannot be termed illegal. Children might get into trouble for posting something that might anger some people like the Shaheen Dhada case.
Technology should be used only when children are mature enough to understand the repercussions." Parul Khona, a counsellor from Koregaon Park, feels that those below 16 years should not use such sites. Citing a recent case, she said, "A 15- year-old girl who had befriended some stranger online went on a blind date and was almost raped. Fortunately, she could escape but it affected her emotionally.
