Lately, it seems like each new day comes with a new update from Facebook, be it for WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger. And with this new day, Facebook is rolling out an early Christmas feature for Messenger’s desktop version. Some Messenger users have started to see a new feature, which lets them dial group voice calls and video calls from the desktop now.

Group chats have been available on Messenger for a really long time now, but since Facebook’s constant efforts of turning the Messenger into a standalone online messaging platform, the group voice and video calling feature was naturally in order. While the feature is still believed to be in a testing phase, the roll out seems to be quite wide. We too received the feature, and to check if you have too, you can open any previous Messenger group chat you had in the past on your desktop. And if the feature has rolled out for you, beside the settings icon on the chat window, you will now see a voice calling and a video calling icon.

When you tap on the video or the voice call icon, a pop up with the names of all the member of the chat are listed. You can select and unselect the members you want (or don’t want) in the group call. Also, for users who do not use the in-line chat box on Facebook, they can still use group calling through the dedicated Facebook Messenger website.

Even though Skype is believed to be the popular choice for video calling feature, the competition is actually heating up. Recently, Slack added the group video-calling feature, and now with Facebook Messenger is upping the ante by adding the functionality. Facebook first rolled out the group calling feature to its Messenger mobile app back in April this year. The feature allowed users to call up to 50 group members at one time. As far as just video calling feature goes, several instant messaging apps like Google Duo, WhatsApp and WeChat among many others already have it.
