Facebook has updated its Account Kit solution that makes it easier for users to log into Android apps with their phone number. Account Kit is a phone number and email login solution introduced by Facebook in April this year. In a latest update to the Account Kit developer tool, users can sign in and start using apps simply by typing in only their phone number. The process will no longer require putting in the code received from an SMS message or as a Facebook push notification to get authentication while signing into the apps.

Account Kit , which was launched as an alternative to the regular Facebook login process, is aimed at offering a password-less authentication with the help of SMS, all without needing a Facebook account. With the newest Instant Verification, if people have a Facebook account containing the number they enter and the Account Kit verifies the number directly without requiring them to manually enter the SMS code. In case the phone number doesn’t match, the process reverts to SMS.

Facebook engineer Ethan Goldman-Kirst explains in a blog post how the procedure works, “When a person enters his/her phone number into an app using Account Kit, via Android services, we attempt a match with the phone number listed on the person’s Facebook profile. This is only possible if the person is logged into the Facebook app on the same device. If there is a match, we can complete the verification without sending a one-time password (OTP) via SMS, making the sign-in flow more seamless. If there isn’t a successful match, a SMS will be sent with a verification code to complete the sign-in. This feature is used only to improve the verification process in a secure way and no additional Facebook information is shared with the app.”

Facebook is currently being used by billions of people worldwide. With its Account Kit, the social networking site allows for cross-platform login seamlessly. Now for example, if you want to sign up for Zomato, you no longer need to fill in a lengthy sign up form, wait for authentication mails, click on the verification link, and so on. You can simply tap on ‘Sign up with Facebook’ and in a single click, you get to access the platform seamlessly. Instant Verification is available through Facebook’s latest software development kits (SDKs) for Android. Developers can integrate the system while building newer Android apps or update the existing ones to make login processes easier.

Meanwhile, rival Google has also been boosting its login process on Android to make authentication simple and swift. With close to one billion active users of its Gmail service worldwide, it is at par with the Facebook userbase. Back in 2015, Google split its login process into two-pages to help reduce confusion for users managing multiple accounts and also to make the process more secure.
