Last week, we reported about Reliance Communications’ ( RCom ) plans to launch 4G services in the first week of July. Almost on cue, RCom’s has today started rolling out its 4G services. A quick look at the company’s website shows the process for existing RCom subscribers to upgrade to 4G. Those upgrading have also been promised 10GB of 4G data for free.
How to upgrade
If you are a postpaid or prepaid user, you can head over to the nearest Reliance Store to collect a 4G SIM card. After collecting one, you will first need to send an SMS from your existing SIM card to 1299. The message should read — 4G < space >19 digit SIM number of the new SIM card. Alternatively, one can also call on 1299 from the existing number and type in the 19-digit 4G SIM number.
If you are using a Reliance Datacard, you can collect a new 4G SIM card from the nearest Reliance Store. Once collected, you will need to head over to the RCom site to fill an upgrade form, and after submission, a new 4G-capable dongle will be delivered to your doorsteps.
Freebies and plans
RCom users who are opting for an upgrade are entitled to free 10GB of 4G data a period of one month. The inaugural offer also includes 150 minutes of local and STD calls for a period of 30 days. Users will only need to pay Rs 93 or Rs 97, depending upon their circle.
After 30 days, prepaid users will need to pay Rs 252 for a 1GB 4G data pack, while a 2GB data pack costs Rs 449. In comparison, the likes of Airtel or Vodafone India charge Rs 255 and Rs 455 for 1GB and 2GB data packs. For postpaid users, RCom’s 1GB data pack costs Rs 300, whereas the likes of Airtel or Vodafone India offer it for Rs 250.
Initially, RCom’s 4G services is being rolled out across 12 circles, including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Currently, users in Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Kerala, Karnataka and Rajasthan aren’t applicable for 4G upgrades.
Reliance Communications owns liberalized license for 850MHz band spectrum in 20 circles, and also entered into spectrum trading and sharing agreements with RJio in various circles. RCom is steadily leveraging its spectrum sharing pacts to migrate its 8 million customers to Jio’s 4G network and phase out its CDMA network in couple of months.
