Even LCD television's set to fade into oblivion

First, the bulky cathode ray tube (CRT) television sets went out of style as liquid crystal display or LCD TVs made a splash in late 1990s. And now, consumers are preferring to buy light emitting diode (LED) TVs as the fast-evolving technology is promising them hi-tech features and lower power consumption at almost the same price as LCD TVs.

Last year, 60% of flat-screen panels sold were LCDs and 35% were LEDs. This year, the equation is expected to reverse.

All this is prompting TV companies to change their plans. Eric Braganza, president-India, Haier Appliances, attributes the change in consumer preferences to the narrowing gap between LCD and LED prices. “Now, it’s a mere Rs 5,000-10,000 in entry level products.”

Sometimes, much less, in fact. Latest data show that an entry-level LED TV sells for Rs 12,900 while LCD models retail for Rs 11,500-12,000.

“When the price difference is so less, then for a one-time investment, consumers are ready to spend more on an LED TV that offers better viewing experience and also saves on power,” said Braganza.

Mahesh Krishnan, vice-president (consumer electronics), Samsung India, said several TV-makers have started trimming down their LCD offerings. Samsung has already cut down its LCD offerings from 3-4 last year to only one this year. It wants to drive growth through LED sales.

“Most consumers are transitioning from CRT TVs straight to LEDs instead of LCDs. As a result, LCD sales have fallen. At this rate, they will soon get phased out,” said Krishnan.

In fact, Panasonic has already exited LCDs. “We are not producing any new LCD TVs.

Once the old stock is finished, we will only have LEDs in our product portfolio,” said Manish Sharma, MD of Panasonic India.

Similarly, LG is mulling exiting the LCD business. “We will most probably exit the LCD business by July this year, though the final date has not yet been confirmed,” said Deepak Jasrotia, sales head of home entertainment at LG Electronics.

With growth in the television market increasingly coming from the premium segment, the focus is now more on differentiated features. So, smart TVs, 3D sets and organic LED or OLED TVs are the way forward, said industry observers.

But all are not true.

Its lcd backed led.

Sorry bro, didn't get you. :u

Do you mean:

LCD TVs backed the entry of LED TVs into the market or...

are you talking about the Backlit LED models :huh

I said all led are technically called "lcd backed led tvs" lcd panel at back with led at front.

You are slightly wrong as its the LCD panel which is in front of the LEDs.

This type is known as LED-backlit LCD Display and use LEDs behind the LCD screen to light it up instead of standard cold-cathode fluorescent lights (or CCFLs).

However, not all LED lit LCD TVs have their LEDs behind the screen, some new models house the LEDs on the sides of the screen and this type is known as Edge-lit LEDs.

Also there is a new breed popularly known as OLEDs which are true LED TVs. The flat panel is made up of millions of tiny LEDs. :tup

LCD or LED
While the giant display in a sports stadium, for example, is made up of thousands of LEDs that are used to directly produce a picture, "LED" TVs are actually LCDs. That's right, they're not LED TVs at all. These so-called LED TVs use a series of LEDs to light up the panel.

Types of backlit
At present there are two main methods of backlighting in LCD flat panels: Cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) and LED (light-emitting diode). CCFL used to be the most widespread method of backlighting for LCD televisions, and consists of a series of tubes laid horizontally down the screen.

Methods of led back lighting
There are two different methods of LED backlighting: Backlit and edgelit. The main advantage of backlit is that it can be used to increase contrast levels by turning selected LEDs off through a function known as local dimming--thus increasing the amount of black in parts of the picture.

OLED
By now you've probably heard about OLED, or organic light-emitting diodes. Make no mistake, this is the most important advancement in TV technology in more than a decade and a vast improvement over both LCD and plasma.

Oled vs led/lcd vs plasma

You only need red, green, and blue light to create a TV image. OLEDs work by putting electricity through certain materials that glow these specific colors. No other TV technology creates light directly like this. LCDs use color filters and light-blocking liquid crystals above a light-creating backlight. Plasmas use UV light created by igniting pockets of gas to excite red, green, and blue phosphors.
