Cardiff (Wales, UK), May 26 : Seeking to consign the recent Ashes win to history, captain Andrew Strauss and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are focussed on achieving the number one Test spot in world cricket.

Having disposed of Australia in emphatic style, England is determined to reach the summit of world cricket starting with the first of three Tests against Sri Lanka being played here from Thursday.

The goal of becoming the No1 Test side, an England and Wales Cricket Board mission statement when the rankings were first brought in but removed when the team went backwards, will help players rekindle their desire, as will the four-and-a-half-month break since their famous achievement in Sydney.

Strauss was very clear that the Ashes victory was in the deep past.

“We have got to learn lessons from what we did well in Australia and put those into practice again,” The Telegraph quoted Strauss, as saying.

He added: “But our goals have shifted completely now and we have turned towards this summer and beyond.”
