India register another one-sided win over hapless England

dGKEp.jpg

MUMBAI: Thriving on a low and slow wicket that suited their strengths, India put in another power-packed display with both bat and ball to outplay England by six wickets and go 4-0 up in the ODI series at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night.

The prospect of a whitewash is a distinct reality now and should that happen on Tuesday in Kolkata, it would be the perfect Diwali gift for the Indian fans who had undergone the horror of watching their team capitulate meekly throughout a bleak English summer.

After bowling England out for 220, thanks to a decent bowling and an electrifying fielding effort, India stumbled initially before the ever-consistent Virat Kohli, who stroked a composed, unconquered 86 off 99 balls (11x4), and Suresh Raina, who blasted 80 off just 62 balls with 12 fours, joined hands and added 131 (113 balls) for the fourth wicket to keep Cook & Co at bay. Both Kohli and Raina produced strokes that lit up the night, and the sparse crowd was treated to some matching fireworks that doubled its delight.

Dhoni aims 5-0 whitewash after win in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The stage is set for a 5-0 whitewash with India's yet another comprehensive win over England on Sunday and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni says the team will leave no stone unturned in terms of preparations for the fifth and final one-dayer in Kolkata.

India hammered England in the fourth ODI by six wickets with 9.5 overs to spare to go ahead 4-0 in the series.

"We have played good cricket in the last few days. There have been instances when we were under pressure but we came out well. If we have won four games it does not mean we will win fifth also. We have to play well and we will go we prepared for the game," Dhoni said after the match.

The last ODI is scheduled for October 25. Dhoni said after England's flourishing start, they thought of chasing close to 270 runs but the spinners turned the tide in his team's favour.

"They got a good start. After 10 overs we thought they will get 270 plus. But there was a twist in the tale. Spinners got more and more turn as the game progressed and that helped us restrain them," he said.

‘Good to have bowlers like Yadav and Aaron’

Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that while there may be some excitement with the arrival of genuine fast bowlers in Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron, pace was not always safe.

“It doesn't guarantee they (fast bowlers) will not go for runs. There are good examples in world cricket. It's good to have bowlers like Yadav and Aaron, both are quicker than the others.

“Aaron bowled consistently around 140 kmph. But one has to manage them and make sure they don't get injured,” Dhoni said.

He also said that the motto of the team was to play cricket. “We are not thinking about a 5-0 win. The ideas is always to play good cricket. Out fielding has been excellent with so many young players in the side.

“Ashwin was expensive in his first over, but he got us a breakthough and thereafter bowling in the Power Plays was brilliant. Jadeja too can be a very difficult bowler to tackle on slow and turning wickets,” said Dhoni.

England captain Alastair Cook said the entire series has been frustrating. “I cannot fault commitment, desire, effort and the way we have been training, but it's just that we are not performing up to levels we have been at in recently times, especially in England.

“We are thinking and talking the right things, but are not able to execute that in the middle. We have lost wickets in clusters. We were hoping for 270 or 280. We lost two wickets of two balls and got off to a rugged start,” said Cook.

Ind vs Eng: Frustrated Cook rues failure to execute plans

iUrOa.jpg

Disappointed England skipper Alastair Cook today expressed his frustration after his team's fourth successive loss to India in the ODI series but felt that it was not because of lack of effort from his players.

Cook said his players could not execute their plans and failed to convert their starts to big scores and it lead to their six-wicket defeat to India in the fourth ODI at the Wandheke stadium today.

“It's quite frustrating. We have not performed at the level we had done recently. We can't fault training, effort or desire or commitment. We are performing anywhere near to what we can do,” said Cook after his side slumped to a six-wicket defeat at the Wankhede Stadium.

“We are definitely talking the right thing, but we need to execute it. We are scoring a lot of 30s and 40s but not getting big scores. It's not easy to get that. Once you get set you need to score big because you can lose wickets in clusters.”

India eye sweep revenge against England

6WZu3.jpg

KOLKATA: They were talking 'pride' in the English camp on Monday, the eve of the fifth and final ODI, much like the Indians must have at the fag end of their disastrous tour of England last month. But, then, pep-talk has never quite been a proxy for proficiency and planning.

The visitors, 0-4 down and looking lost in conditions far removed from those they enjoyed at home in the summer, need to quickly adopt a new approach and attitude if they hope to pull one back against a team that's carrying ominous belligerence and belief in its backyard.

The Indians, who will be keen to complete the sweep on Tuesday as an apt answer to the humiliating defeats in England, have had an answer to everything Alastair Cook and his boys have thrown at them. But, then, the posers have been few and far between.

In Mumbai on Sunday, England showed snatches of intensity, first through some aggression from the top-order and then by using the new ball well, but these periods of purpose inevitably gave way to the rudderless drifts that have come to reflect not just the lack of skills in subcontinental conditions but also half-baked strategies.

Bhajji back in contention for Tests

QEEeZ.jpg

NEW DELHI: Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is back in contention for the upcoming home Test series against the West Indies, starting at the Ferozeshah Kotla from November 6.

It is understood that four spinners will be fighting for three slots. R Ashwin, who has been in good form in recent ODI matches, has already made a case for himself along with other contenders Harbhajan, Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra. Whether the selectors opt for three spinners or two spinners will be decided on the floor of the house later this month, but sources in the team management told TOI that MS Dhoni and team are going to pitch for Harbhajan's comeback into the Test team.

Harbhajan was panned for his lackluster performance in both forms of the game in England. Since his withdrawal from the Test series in England due to a stomach strain, he wasn't even considered for the ongoing ODI series against England. The selectors wanted him to get back to the domestic grind and rediscover the bite in his bowling before making a comeback at the highest level. To Harbhajan's credit, he delivered - for both Mumbai Indians in the Champions League and India Green in the Challenger Trophy this month.

Given the spate of injuries that spoiled India's English summer, the Indian cricket board has now emphasized on playing domestic matches before getting a fitness certificate from the National Cricket Academy.
