Ekta Kapoor, the popular queen of soaps, is gearing up for another line of content for Balaji Telefilms’ OTT platform under the ALT brand.
Though the complete content line-up has not been unveiled yet, bits and pieces are coming out in the open.

Now revealed is a biopic on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, showcasing the untold story of the adventurous freedom fighter’s life. The digital series will seek to unravel a larger mystery surrounding Bose and his life that is still unknown. Rajkummar Rao will essay the role of Bose in the series.
ALT Balaji, the production company’s digital content arm, had earlier made public its first original web series that would centre around the Indian armed forces and have actress Nimrat Kaur in the lead with Nagesh Kukunoor wearing the director’s hat.

So, Balaji Telefilms’ OTT platform, set for launch in early 2017, will go beyond the traditional brand of TV content identified with the production house. It will have a varied menu and not just look at bold, soapy content targeted at the youth.

Promising to break stereotypes in storytelling, ALT Balaji aims to disrupt the market with avant-garde and exclusive content catering to urban masses.

After narrating the story of Silk Smitha in ‘The Dirty Picture’ for the big screen, Kapoor will now bring Bose’s life to the digital world, with an all-new dimension to the storytelling.
“The unknown side of events, happenings and personalities have always intrigued me; I am drawn to these mysteries! Bose is such a strong character from our history, and yet there is so much about him that we don’t know, and that hasn’t been told on any medium before. The unbounded mystery around him is so fascinating that I was triggered to tell this side of his story on the digital platform. It is edgy, fast-paced, everything that you don’t expect it to be,” said Kapoor.

Exploring the ‘Alt’ side of Bose, Rajkummar is now spending most of his time researching and prepping for the once-in-a-lifetime kind of role.
“I’m excited to explore the unheard journey of Netaji on screen. It’s a great opportunity for me as an actor. I was totally blown away hearing his life story. He is one of the most mysterious and fascinating persons of our history, and of course, we all know about his true love for the country. With Ekta and Synergy backing it, I don’t have any doubts that our audience will get to witness something never seen before on Indian screen,” said Rajkummar.

As reported earlier by TelevisionPost.com, ALT Balaji is building capability to have 250 hours of original programming and 32 series.
Targeted at upmarket and urban audiences, the OTT platform will initially offer English and Hindi content. Going forward, it will have regional content in Tamil, Bengali and Telugu to cater to a wider spectrum of audiences.
To launch and expand the digital media unit, Balaji has raised Rs 150 crore (Rs 1.5 billion) by issuing preference shares to global investors like Atyant Capital India Fund I, Vanderbilt University, GH, GHI LTP Ltd, GHI HSP and GHI ERP.

ALT Balaji, housed under Balaji Telefilms’ subsidiary Alt Digital Media Entertainment, will be a mix of subscription-based and premium ad-supported models.

Some of the key players in the Indian OTT space are Hotstar, Sony Liv, Voot, OZEE, dittoTV, YuppTV, Spuul, Netflix, HOOQ, Eros Now and Hungama Play.
