I have ubuntu 14.04 & windows 8.1 both installed on my laptop.
Windows 8.1 is default OS. In bios UEFI is default boot option.
When I need to boot ubuntu, I just pressed F12 during bootup & select Ubuntu to start.
My laptop had pre-installed windows 8.1 . I installed Ubuntu Desktop using Live DVD.
mystic dear your answer is no help to me as you might be picked 0 as screen time out on windows boot manager so when ever you presses F12 it does not go away and you have option to switch to ubuntu but that's of no help to me.
fact file : you are on laptop environment where as i am on desktop & you are having 1 hard disk where as i am having 2 hard disk.
elaboration in detail.
- hard disk 1(7200 RPM)
partition details
partition 1 : system recovery(partition type : primary)
partition 2 : efi system partition(partition type : system & active boot partition,UEFI boot partition)
partition 3 : windows installed partiton(partition type : crash dump & primary)
partition 4 & 5 : as equal as windows partition used for data(partition type : primary)
partition 6 : 1/5 less space data partition in compare to 3,4 & 5(partition type : primary)
- hardisk 2(5600 RPM)
partition details
partition 1 : full capacity - 1 GB(partition type : EX4,ubuntu install partition)
partition 2 : 1 GB(partition type : swap memory)
other details :
- windows boot manager & grub both boot loader resides in non mountable EFI partition.
- as new boot loader grub knows windows boot location but in any case i picks windows boot loader which i wants it does not have grub boot details. to add grub boot bcdedit(windows boot editor) needs grub boot details under mountable drive partition which brakes my boot chain to ubuntu.
- use of easybcd tool which ubuntu suggests is can not be used as it uses MBR(master boot record) technology.where as in UEFI it uses GPT(global partition table) technology. in GPT all records are stored on non mountable point at active boot partition from where your computer can boot. in MBR every partition can hold there native boot which can be used any time.
- i am working from my home so as being working professional i can not make waiting to my client til my experiment goes over so after 2 days of strugle i am left to only one way which is to add linux first and then windows 8.1 so windows boot loader have ubuntu's details as on this 3rd day it's my high time where i should come back to my work and not experiments over os installs.
