Trent Bridge, Aug 2: It seems that the law of averages has finally caught up with Indian skipper M S Dhoni. The man with the Midas Touch, as he has been hailed for his tremendous reputation of warding off defeat, has at last been confronted by it in the ongoing Test series in England.
Trailing 0-2 in the 4-match series, it would take an astounding amount of resolve from his team to square the series. But the man who has won 15 out of the 27 Tests at the helm with 5 losses and 8 drawn encounters, says that India can turn the tables on England in the next two Tests.
After all, he has previously moulded the team into a potent force. Under his captaincy, India has won The World Twenty20, an ODI series Down Under and the Border-Gavaskar Test series in 2008 and 2010, not to mention the World Cup 2011 and last month's Test engagement against the West Indies.
Furthermore, Dhoni has the highest win rate (62.6%) for Indians who have captained more than 20 Test matches. Kapil Dev comes in second with 56% win rate. Ganguly, Azhar India's two most capped captains follow close behind with a 54% win rate.
However, Dhoni, who has notched up a poor run of scores in the series - 28, 16, 5 and 0 is yet to play a captain's innings, statistics that do not reflect his batting average of 38.32. It seems his forgettable form has coincided with that of the whole team as they struggle to come to terms with England's seamer conditions. But Dhoni is confident of a effecting a turn-around and pre-empting what could be his first series defeat as captain.
