Following directions from the Centre, the Delhi government Saturday organised 67 camps across the city to help labourers open bank accounts using Aadhaar cards. The move is meant to ensure they are paid wages on time. As many as 7,698 application forms were received at the camps, Abhishek Singh, District Magistrate, headquarters, said.

District magistrates of all 11 districts in the capital had Friday held meetings with managers of banks and labour department officials to work out the location of the camps and other modalities, Juhi Mukherjee, District Collector, headquarters, said.

“I have been told that account opening kits with RuPay cards will be ready by Tuesday,” Mukherjee said. District Magistrate, north, Amit Satija said the drive was targeted at casual labourers. Many of them had been contacted by the district administration and the Labour Department to join the drive.

“It was a task that also gave us satisfaction. These labourers must not suffer. Now their wages will directly go into their bank accounts. We had contacted labour unions as well to make sure the list of required documents is circulated among them,” said Satija.

The camps will be in place till November 30, said officials. In a statement, the government said the Revenue Department played a proactive role “in pursuance of Government of India’s directions” to launch the campaign to open bank accounts.
