I am getting 11 ms for 8.8.8.8 and 5 ms for 1.1.1.1 DNS.

58 ms for 8.8.8.8 is very bad tbh. Dns should ideally be lower than 10 ms. This is all using stock ZTE ONT and Airtel Fiber btw. Ping just matters on distance to nearest server. The only way ONT / Router helps in this case is if they are using too many devices at the same time.
not everyone stays near metro cities, remember that

Even then, it is really bad.

I also get 28-40ms to these DNS servers while being quite far from metro cities. Though I could get as low as 21-22ms in some other ISP.

And if I have to guess, @Bapun lives somewhere in the north or east. Most likely North, since his ping was really good to Delhi in few of his screenshots. So, Airtel could route him through Google's Delhi server, but they are routing him through Mumbai (I suppose). So, yeah, it is really bad.

I am in the high 50s in every DNS, and I am waay far north-east.

Hmm, is your ping poor to even Kolkata servers?

BTW, in case of Bapun, he at least gets decent ping to Delhi, so Airtel should prioritize Delhi server for well known DNS like Google's.

never tried kolkata servers, don't know if they are routed via there
maybe send some kolkata IPs so I can test
my service is routed directly to delhi first, then elsewhere

Try multiple Kolkata servers in Speed Test website and see if any of them give you low ping.

I don't know whether the websites suddenly became faster or it is magic of my new setup by bypassing the Airtel ONT.

But for sure websites are more responsive now with the TP-Link GPON setup. Almost instantaneously pages are loading, despite having the same speed.

I assume it can be because the DPI stuff are not there. 🤔🤨
