BENGALURU: Nearly 60 feet below the ground, the second half of the Kempegowda Interchange Metro station, along the North-South Corridor, is being readied round-the-clock. A welcome relief for Metro commuters will be the sprawling parking space on offer.

The total area of five acres will have six levels of free space, out of which one has been earmarked for paid parking. Other amenities, including 24 escalators and 40 staircases, will be provided at the station, which is being built at a cost of Rs 400 crore.

"For the first time in Bengaluru, four trains can be simultaneously run in this Metro station, two serving the East-West Corridor and two running along the North-South Corridor," Pradeep Singh Kharola, Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, told Express.

The entire North-South Corridor, currently running only in the Northern Line between Nagasandra and Sampige Road Mantri Square station, will connect Nagasandra with Yelachenahalli. The fully functional East-West Corridor already connects Baiyappanahalli with Mysore Road.

"At any given time, apart from the roughly 4,000 commuters on board the train, an additional 2,000 passengers can wait at platforms," he said. Metro plans to complete all works related to the station by November-end.

A huge entrance will come up on the Chikkalalbagh side, he added Apart from offering easy switchover at the station for commuters from all four directions of the city, it would be connected to the BMTC and KSRTC depots and the railway station

On the parking facility for commuters, Kharola said, "The biggest parking space at Mysore Road is around 1.5 acres. We will have five acres of space on each floor at Kempegowda station The plan is to have one level dedicated for parking but if demand shoots up, we have potential space to meet the demand"

The parking at Mysore Road Metro houses 1,700 two-wheelers and 250 four-wheelers. Asked if the parking fares could be at a premium here, he said, "It is too early to comment
