Vijay Amritsar’s Champions Tennis League, which kicks off its second edition on 23 November, is eyeing profitability by the fourth season.

Speaking to Televisionpost.com, Second Serve CEO Arjun Rao said, “We believe that within 3-4 years, the franchises and the league will be on solid financial ground, but a lot of work needs to be done by everyone.

Only with the league working closely with the team owners to deliver on franchise interests will there be any hope of financial recovery in this time frame.”

He added that this is definitely not a short-term ‘windfall’ business proposition.

“It is a serious business, requires focus, attention and dedication from everyone involved, and we believe that everything will be profitable by the end of the third season, or through the fourth season at the latest.”


Venues The organisers have replaced three cities with three new cities. Delhi, Pune and Bangalore have been replaced with Raipur, Nagpur and a sixth city currently being finalised.

“We intend to grow the number of cities in the years to come, if we can figure out a way to ensure that all team owners benefit from the extension.

It will not make sense to do so if we are unable to give team owners every opportunity to leverage their team and franchise assets in the league fully, to maximise their revenue potential.”

In terms of new cities being chosen and older cities replaced, he noted that owners have their own reasons to invest in sporting leagues.

Business decisions are always a factor of current trends, finances and positive business climate, whatever their individual businesses are.

“When these change, their interests automatically change, and so we respect these business decisions that lead to pullouts.

In the case of the Pune franchise (Rendezvous Sports World), the matter has reached court for recovery of dues that the franchise owner has to pay for the 2014 season.” In terms of the learning from the first season, he note
