Can we use different tonnage Air Conditioners (AC) indoor and outdoor units together?

I don't know where to post this question regarding Air conditioner so I'm asking here..

Can We use 1 ton indoor unit with 1.5 ton outdoor unit ?

OR

1.5 ton indoor unit with 1 ton outdoor unit ??

Anybody who has knowledge about AC please answer

The tonnage of a split AC comes from the outdoor unit only. The indoor unit just have an evaporator and blower (and maybe some filters). The indoor unit doesn't have anything to do with the capacity of the AC unit.

Coming to your query. A straightforward answer for your question would be YES. You can use any indoor unit for any outdoor unit. Because all the cooling comes from the outdoor unit only. Indoor unit is basically a fan which throws the cool air (using the coolant received from outdoor unit) out to our room.

However, the outdoor and indoor unit are designed to work as a couple. They work best in tandem. The various features available in that AC unit, including the power saving star ratings, may not work correctly if you mismatch the indoor and outdoor units. It's like asking, if we can wear a sports shoe on one leg and a formal shoe on another. It might be practically possible but logically absurd.

Using a mismatched indoor and outdoor unit might actually work. But it will create issues on the long run. The lifetime of both the units will be affected by this.
