Australia are considering the possibility of hosting a day-night Test match during the Ashes 2017-18, according to James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief. He also confirmed that day-night Tests were being contemplated upon when Pakistan and South Africa pay Australia a visit later this year.
"It is certainly on the radar," Sutherland told ABC Radio on Monday (January 4). "We haven't had any formal conversations with the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board)."
The first pink-ball Test held last November between Australia and New Zealand proved to be a grand success as a total of 123,736 fans attended the game over three days. The first day alone attracted over 47,000 people which was the highest at the Adelaide Oval since the 1932-33 'bodyline' series.
The hosts won the closely-fought contest by three wickets with both sets of players voicing their support for the new concept.
"With the success of the Adelaide Test match this year, the anticipation is that we will have at least one day-night Test (in 2016)," said Sutherland. "It seems like it would be a natural progression for there to be an Ashes day-night Test match in 2017-18."
He also added that there will be meetings held with his Pakistani and South African counterparts regarding the same. "We'll have meetings in Dubai (in January) with a lot of the chief executives and certainly will be talking to counterparts at Pakistan and South Africa.
"They definitely know it will be on the agenda. The right place, right time and right conditions -- we're going to see more Test cricket played in the evening."
