Visakhapatnam, Aug. 16:
The AP telecom circle of BSNL is investing Rs 600 crore on expanding mobile network and adding 2 million lines in addition to the existing 9 million, according to V. Srinivasan, Chief General Manager of AP circle.

At a press meet here on Thursday, he said the equipment for the mobile network expansion would be received from ZTE by the end of September and work would begin in October. He said BSNL was in the third position in the mobile segment in Andhra Pradesh, with Airtel and Idea in first and second positions.

He said growth in the mobile segment was quite impressive. There are not many takers for landlines. Lakhs of landline phone connections were being surrendered, a trend witnessed in other parts of the country as well, he said.

The circle had shown revenue growth of 3.7 per cent in 2011-12 and had earned revenue of Rs 2,300 crore. During the first four months of the current fiscal, revenue growth was impressive at 8.7 per cent. “We would like to sustain it and even improve on it,” he added.

Srinivasan said broadband services in the State were growing at a healthy rate in the rest of the State, but in the capital city of Hyderabad BSNL was facing very stiff competition from private operator. The private operator was offering broadband services at a much cheaper rate and BSNL also was contemplating introduction of special tariff for Hyderabad to face the competition. He said that in the group performance measurement system in BSNL, the AP circle was in the fifth position and it would strive to improve its performance. He said the tele-density in Andhra Pradesh was 14 per cent and it was 15 in Visakhapatnam district.

Both the 3G and 2G services were making headway in the State and on the whole the performance was very satisfactory. He said special efforts would be made to have a robust network in the State capital of Hyderabad. P. Nagaraju, senior General Manager of Visakhapatnam telecom district, also spoke.
