JAKARTA: Ace Indian shuttler
Parupalli Kashyap rallied to shock
world No. 1 Chen Long, continuing
his giant-killing spree to enter the
men's singles semifinals of the
Indonesia Open Super Series
badminton tournament on Friday.
Kashyap, ranked 12th in the world,
came from behind to beat the top
seed Chinese 14-21, 21-17, 21-14 in a
contest that lasted an hour and
three minutes.

JAKARTA: Indian shuttler Parupalli
Kashyap squandered a dominating
position to crash out of the
Indonesia Open Super Series with a
semifinal loss to eighth seed Momota
Kento on Saturday.
The Indian, who defeated world
number one Chen Long in the
quarterfinal on Friday, lost 21-12,
17-21, 19-21 in a draining battle
which lasted an hour and 11
minutes.
Kashyap and Kento were facing off
after a gap of two years and the
Japanese had emerged triumphant
in their previous encounter as well.
Kashyap was quick off the blocks,
taking a 2-0 lead to start with but
Kento did not let him go off the
hook as he drew level at 6-6.
The battle was neck-and-neck from
thereon before Kashyap grabbed an
11-8 edge. Then he reeled off six
consecutive point to take control of
the game and pocket it in 16
minutes.

HYDERABAD: Parupalli Kashyap got
off to a flying start and looked well
in control of things but a poor call
towards the end of the third game
ended his dreams of making it to
the maiden final of a Super Series
Premier.
The 28-year-old suffered a heart-
breaking loss as he allowed his
opponent Kento Momota to snatch
victory from the jaws of defeat in the
semifinals of the Indonesia Open in
Jakarta on Saturday.
Kashyap lost 21-12, 17-21, 19-21 in a
nail-biting one hour, 16 minute
contest against the Japanese
challenger. Leading 19-16 in the
deciding game, Kashyap erred in
judgement and left alone the return
which to his embarrassment landed
on the line.
He then failed to return a drop
giving it a lot of lift and making it
easier for Momota to go for a smash
winner. He conceded five
consecutive points to the 20-year-old
to suffer another close loss similar to
the one he experienced at the last
World championships where he
missed a medal by a whisk a medal

JAKARTA: Defending champion Jan
O. Jorgensen of Denmark sailed to
the Indonesia Open finals after
Germany's Marc Zwiebler was forced
to retire due to illness on Saturday.
Third-seeded Jorgensen faced a
tough fight from Zwiebler, who
refused to let up and kept points
tight up to 17-17 in the first set.
The German, however, made
unforced errors afterwards that
handed victory to Jorgensen.
Embracing the victory, last year's
men's singles winner Jorgensen said:
"It feels amazing to be in two finals
in a row. That's crazy."
Zwiebler said he was forced to retire
after what appeared to be food
poisoning.
"I ate food at the hotel and
something was not right. I spent the
night and day in the bathroom.
Before the match, I got a high
temperature. I went to see a doctor.
It was 39 Celsius," Zwiebler said
after the game.
"Normally I should have not played
but I wanted to give it a try," he
added.
The Dane said he expected a hard-
won battle when he faced Japanese
rising star Kento Momota at the
finals on Sunday.
Momota defeated Indian ace
shuttler Parupalli Kashyap, whom a
day earlier toppled badminton world
number one Chen Long of China.
Kashyap had played well, attacking
the eight-year younger Momota with
his precise smashes while
maintaining his composure at the
same time.

Thai badminton star Ratchanok
Intanon grabbed an easy win in the
women’s singles event in the
