The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has now said that it will examine the latest cash back offer strictly as to check for any violation of rules.
The director general of COAI, Rajan Mathews, in an interview said “If the offer is in the nature of cash back, the question arises as to what conditions attach to receiving the cash back. Is this another way of discounting the service cost? TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) will need to parse these offers to determine if any of this violates their tariff regulations in letter and spirit.”
Reliance Jio led by Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani has earlier accused COAI of only looking into the interest of three big telecom companies viz. Airtel, Vodafone and Idea as the lobby group members of COAI includes those of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular and the newly entered Jio.
COAI said that where cash gets involved, the terms and conditions become more important than the coupons or the minutes that are used and “hence the need for the regulator to decide”. The chairman of TRAI, RS Sharma said, “We routinely examine the offers and we will continue to do so.”
Bad news for Reliance Jio users who were expecting a cashback on their recharge!
