With their last set of matches yet to be played, Australia Women won the ICC Women's Championship, following England's 3-2 series win over West Indies, an International Cricket Council (ICC) release stated on Thursday (October 20).
The six-time champions will be presented with the trophy after they play their final championship game against South Africa in Sydney on November 23.
The win meant that while West Indies can reach a maximum of 28 points after their three remaining games, England can only get to 29, one behind Australia's 30, that they amassed after 18 of the slotted 21 games. Of the games played so far, Australia whitewashed West Indies, Sri Lanka and Pakistan 3-0, while they beat England, New Zealand and India by a 2-1 margin.
Meg Lanning has led from the front with over 1000 runs in the championship, which include four centuries. Ellyse Perry and Nicole Bolton have been among the runs, while the former also has 20 wickets. However, Jess Jonassen has been the most successful bowler with 29.
The top four sides of the competition will gain direct qualification for the ICC Women's World Cup 2017, while the bottom four will participate in the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier in February 2017 to earn their spot. Australia Women win ICC Women's Championship - Cricbuzz
