Indian Test opener Murali Vijay and offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin have been included in a full-strength Tamil Nadu squad for their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal clash against Karnataka, which starts on December 23 in Visakhapatnam. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association announced the squad on Sunday (December 18) after the third day's play of the final Test between India and England in Chennai. Opener Abhinav Mukund will continue to lead the side.
Even though both the players have been named, whether they will be a part of the playing XI or not remains to be seen since the clash begins just two days after the conclusion of the ongoing final Test against England. Vijay in particular, had already injured his shoulder during the game, as a result of which he had to come out to bat at No. 6 in India's first innings.
KL Rahul and Karun Nair, who are also a part of the Indian XI in the Chennai Test, could figure in the knockout clash as well, considering the significance of the contest. On Saturday though, the chairman of selectors MSK Prasad had hinted that the Indian regulars might not feature in the Ranji Trophy knockout clashes after a grueling series. "The players have been playing for quite some time now. So I think it will be unfair on our part to expect them to play in the quarterfinal. But we will think about it," Prasad had told TOI.
