Apple has started making its flagship iPhone 11 at the Foxconn plant near Chennai, the first time it’s manufactured a top-of-the-line model in the country, marking a boost for the government’s Make in India initiative.

Production will be stepped up in phases and Apple may consider exporting the India-made iPhone 11, reducing its dependence on China, two senior industry executives said.

The 'i' in iPhone 11 now stands for India-made: Apple for the first time makes a top-of-the-line model in the country

Good initiative by Apple. Hopefully, other brands follows the market innovator.

Would have preferred if they manufactured instead of assembling. This is to bypass GST. Chinese OEMs are already cheating taxes by doing this. Don't need Americans to follow the suit.

That's good news but they are not manufacturing it. They are just assembling it in India. Many articles are saying it as manufacturing instead of assembling.

This is probably the 4th model they are manufacturing in India. They are making SE, 7, XR and now 11.

still technically manufacturing.

They are technically assembling.. There's a distinct difference between manufacturing and assembling..

No brand, no country can do this. Atleast not for another 5-10 years. They all are dependent on various countries (including China) for various components. Take a look at Where Is the iPhone Made? (Hint: Not Just China)

They don't pay GST but the import duty. Importing whole assembled product attract more import duty than importing all of the components. Remember the controversy where Sachin was asked to pay 1.2 Cr. duty for his 75L ferrari, that's because it was a fully assembled product. So brands prefer to import them as components and then assemble here in India.

They cant manufacture in India or anywhere because Apple is not into manufacturing. They just buy the components from different companies and assemble them.

That's why they say Designed by Apple. They just design them and assemble the components.

No Bro, They are just attaching the multiple pre-manufactured components. They are not gonna buy any raw items or semi-raw materials in India.

These companies use that under manufacture term so they can avoid taxes.
