Apple Quietly Increases MacBook Prices by Up to Rs. 10,000

HIGHLIGHTS

The 12-inch MacBook now starts at Rs. 112,900The faster variant is costlier by Rs. 10,000The MacBook was last updated in April

While the entire world was focussed on the launch of the new MacBook Pro, Apple India decided to quietly increase the price of the MacBook by as much as Rs. 10,000. The change happened last week, and Apple India’s website has been updated to reflect the new prices.

The 12-inch MacBook now starts at Rs. 112,900, an increase of Rs. 6,000 from last October, when prices across the entire Mac line were revised. The variant with a faster processor and double the SSD storage now retails at Rs. 129,990 139,900, an increase of Rs. 10,000. The US price of the MacBook remains unchanged, as does the India price of other Mac desktops and laptops, so the move is curious to say the least. As always, these are maximum retail prices, and the products may be available at lower prices online as well as offline.

The MacBook was last updated in April with sixth-generation Intel Skylake processor as well as slightly faster RAM and PCIe-based flash storage. A new Rose Gold colour option was also added, to go with the Space Grey, Gold, and Silver variants available at the time.

With the 11-inch MacBook Air discontinued, the MacBook is the smallest portable Mac that Applecurrently offers. If the 13-inch MacBook Air is discontinued in the near future as well, it is likely that the MacBook will get a makeover and be repositioned to become the new entry-level portable Mac - when that happens is anyone’s guess.

Apple MacBook prices hiked by up to Rs 10,000 in India

Apple has quietly hiked the prices of its 12-inch MacBook lineup by up to Rs 10,000. The new prices have been updated on Apple’s India website. The first generation MacBook was launched in March 2015 with prices starting from Rs 99,000. Earlier this April, Apple refreshed the lineup with bumped up hardware specifications and also increased the price to Rs 106,900. However, after the new MacBook Pro announcement, Apple has hiked the price of the existing MacBook lineup as well. So the base MacBook variant is now priced at Rs 112,900, a hike of Rs 6,000. Similarly, the top-end configuration mode now costs Rs 139,900, a hike of Rs 10,000 from the earlier pricing of Rs 129,900.

The MacBook comes with a Force Touch trackpad and edge-to-edge keyboard design. It is offered in two configurations – both feature a 12-inch LED-backlit display with IPS technology, running at a resolution of 2304×1440 pixels (16:10 aspect ratio), and pixel density of 226ppi. The base variant is powered by Intel’s Core m3 dual-core processor clocked at 1.1GHz (turbo boost up to 2.2GHz), paired with 8GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 515 and 256GB flash storage. The souped up variant is powered by a slightly faster Intel Core m5 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz (turbo boost up to 2.7GHz), paired with 8GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 515 and 512GB flash storage.

Rest of the specifications remains the same for both variants – you get Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and just one USB Type-C port. It is a multipurpose port that can be used for charging, data transfer, VGA output, DisplayPort or as an HDMI output port, but you’ll need an adapter for all that. On the right edge, you get a 3.5mm audio jack with support for iPhone headset and remote with microphone. The 12-inch MacBook can offer up to 10 hours of web browsing and up to 11 hours of iTunes movie playback, Apple claims.

Apple recently gave the much-needed overhaul to the MacBook Pro line, which now comes with a slimmer design, better hardware, touch-enabled OLED ‘Touch Bar’ and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded inside the power button. It is offered in 13.3-inch and 15.4-inch model. This time around, Apple went with a ‘Touch Bar’ strip that brings virtual interchangeable buttons, instead of having dedicated keys for skipping music tracks, controlling the volume and changing display brightness. As the ‘Touch Bar’ is contextual, the buttons changes based on the app that you are using. For instance, if you are using Safari browser, the Touch Bar will have buttons such as add new tab, favorites, search bar and more. When using Word, it can offer tools such as bold, change color, italics, strike-through, and copy, paste and more.

The Touch ID power button is powered by Apple T1 Chip and Secure Enclave. Besides scanning the fingerprint and allowing password less login to the system, it can also be used to make payments on Mac OS Sierra. Apple has also introduced a 13-inch MacBook without the ‘Touch Bar’ which is priced at Rs 129,900. The 13.3-inch model with Touch Bar will set you back by Rs 155,900, whereas the 15.4-inch model costs 205,900.
