Apple iOS 10.2 beta 3: SOS feature being tested for India only

Apple has rolled out iOS 10.2 beta 3 developer version for iPhone, iPad and this update removes an earlier SOS-feature. According to MacRumors, Apple’s release notes say the SOS-feature is going to be India-only and it looks the company was just testing it for now. For those who remember, the Indian government has proposed that all smartphones should have an SOS-function via a separate button or software feature.

According to reports, Apple’s SOS-feature will allow for emergency services to be contacted when the power button is pressed more than five times. The functionality is now India-only in the developer beta, according to MacRumors. So developers in India should be able to check out this feature if they are on the latest beta build.

Other updates being added in the 10.2 beta 3 for developers includes new Unicode 9.0 emojis, new TV app, new wallpapers (but only for iPhone 7 series) and new camera settings. The other big change with the 10.2 upgrade is it replaces Videos app with Apple TV app in the US. The TV app has been redesigned to make it simpler and the Settings menu has undergone a few changes.

Apple’s iOS 10.2 beta 3 brings support for Unicode 9.0 emojis, which include selfie, facepalm, shrug, pregnant woman, mother and son emoji; a father with two kids emoji, rainbow flag and more. There are gender diverse emojis such as woman detective, athlete, weight lifter, swimmer, surfer and more. Other interesting emojis include ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing), drooling face, clown face and lying face.

Apple is introducing its Single Sign-On feature with iOS 10.2 Beta 3. The Single Sign-On feature is available in a new TV provider tab and can be used for watching live TV via apps. There’s a new Celebrate screen effect called ‘Send With Love’ for Messages that creates a big red heart in the background.

It is interesting to see Apple prepare for the India market with an SOS feature. Apple CEO Tim Cook has already said he sees great potential and future for the company in the Indian market, and the company has seen iPhone sales pick up, although it is not yet in the top five vendors in terms of volume.

The SOS-button on smartphones could soon be mandatory if one goes by the government stance, and looks like Apple will be prepared for that once it comes into effect.
