Apple has started rolling out its latest iOS 10.2 update for compatible iPhones, iPads and iPod touch. The update brings in a host of new features and improvements, including hundreds of new emojis, new iMessage effects, and an Emergency SOS feature for Indian users. The update also brings along the usual set of bug fixes.

Let’s first start with Emergency SOS feature that has been rolled out primarily for Indian users. This feature has been introduced ever since the Government of India announced mandatory guidelines for mobile phone manufacturers, which states that all mobile phones launched in India from 2017 onwards must have a panic button. To use this feature head over to Settings -> General -> Emergency SOS. Once enabled, the feature will automatically call emergency services when the power button is rapidly clicked three times (or five times). The call to the emergency services will also include one’s current location whether or not the Location Services feature is enabled. Once the call ends, a message containing one’s current location will also be sent to a list of pre-selected emergency contacts. This feature is not mandatory, and can also be disabled all together from Settings.

With iOS 10.2, Apple says it has introduced hundreds of new emojis. These include, “more diverse characters, new professions, expressions like face palm, shrug and fingers crossed, and new emoji representing sports, food, animals and more.” Apple has also fixed a keyboard-related issue on iMessage, and has launched introduced new ‘love and celebration’ full-screen effects.

The Camera app now gets a feature that preserves your favorite settings, even after you have closed the app. So your favorite Photo Filter, or your preference for HDR and Live Photos will be saved for when you open the app again. The Photos app is also being improved with better accuracy for grouping similar photos of the same person in the People Album. Live Photos are also getting improved stabilization and faster frame rate.

Further improvements included in this update are new wallpapers for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus , redesigned shuffle and repeat buttons on the Music app, a new Apple TV app for users in the US, and a new Siri splash screen among others.

Since its released back in September, iOS 10 is now running on over 63 percent of Apple devices worldwide. To put that into perspective, the latest Android Nougat only runs on 0.3 percent after four months since release.
