The Android distribution numbers for the first week of November are here and we have a new entry in the list. Nougat finally makes it to the table with a tiny 0.3 percent share since its official launch in August this year. Another highlight of the Android distribution is that Marshmallow now runs on 24 percent devices, an increase from its earlier 18.7 percent. This is the first Android distribution list since the last one released in September, so the data is for the period of September and October. As of now, Lollipop (5.0 and 5.1 combined) still leads the charts with 34.1 percent market share, followed by KitKat with 25.2 percent. Jelly Bean (4.1.x and 4.2.x combined) comes third with 13.7 percent.
Android’s ancient version Froyo still stands unshaken at 0.1 percent, while Gingerbread (2.3.3 and 2.3.7 combined) has reduced its presence from 1.5 percent to 1.3 percent. Ice-cream Sandwich (4.0.3 and 4.0.4 combined) joins Gingerbread with 1.3 percent, a decrease from the previous 1.4 percent. According to the latest Android distribution system, the other Android versions have also decreased its presence on smartphones in the past two months. Lollipop has slowly come down from 35 percent to 34.1 percent, KitKat has gone down to 25.2 percent from 27.7 percent and Jelly Bean too has decreased from 15.6 percent to 13.7 percent.
Although KitKat comes second with 25.2 percent, it has been the most common version of Android, on the basis of the API level and it has remained so for around two years now. Otherwise, Lollipop heads with two versions combined. Marshmallow may soon take over KitKat as the most common Android version with its current presence just one percent behind KitKat. Marshmallow has had a rough and very slow start as it is almost a year since its official launch in December 2015. But currently, many smartphones in categories of both high-end and entry-level as well are launching with Marshmallow out-of-the-box, the increase was expected, and will most likely increase over the weeks.
Speaking about Android Nougat, it has finally debuted in the Android distribution list. This year took a surprise turn, as LG V20 was the first smartphone to launch with Android Nougat, unlike the customary Google Nexus smartphones. Google has already released the Developer Preview of Android Nougat 7.1, and Android Nougat 7.0 is currently running on a good number of devices, with more to come soon. Other than the Google Nexus and Pixel devices, Android Nougat is currently available on LG G5 smartphone. HTC smartphones like HTC 10, HTC One M10 and HTC One A9 will be getting the Nougat update soon, the company has promised. Sony has also confirmed Nougat update on smartphones like Xperia X Performance, Xperia XZ, Xperia X and more.
Huawei has also promised Nougat update on a number of its devices, but given the company’s record of slow updates, it may deliver later than expected. OnePlus smartphones will also be getting the Nougat update in December this year. While the Moto G4 and G4 Plus had been expected to receive the update already, the smartphones are still running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Samsung has been very slow with the Marshmallow update, so the Nougat update may also take a couple of months to roll out.
Nonetheless, given the long list of smartphones ready to receive Nougat update this month and in the coming months, it is most likely that Nougat’s presence will increase in some time.
