Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie release date rumors were put on hold when reports surfaced that Google had
switched gears to focus on an Android 4.3 update , but according to VR-Zone , a source at Google has revealed
that Android 5.0 should launch in late October.
The fact that Motorola’s X Phone is scheduled to launch at around the same time is likely no coincidence. In
the past, Google has used its Nexus smartphone launches to usher in new Android operating systems,
announcing 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich alongside the Galaxy Nexus. With no Nexus 5 in sight, the company,
which purchased Motorola Mobility back in 2011 for $12.5 billion, may decide to use the X Phone’s launch to
announce Android 5.0.
VR-Zone ‘s source also claims that Android 5.0 will reduce the fragmentation that has plagued Google’s mobile
OS by running on all devices with at least 512 MB of RAM (many of which are still stuck running Android 2.3
Gingerbread). This would be a huge step forward for Google, and would give the company a huge edge against
Apple’s iOS.
