Rolling out a new 3G service across 60 towns in Assam, the country's largest telecom operator Airtel today said it is facing peoples' resistance in setting up new towers to curb call drops.

Airtel launched its 'Platinum 3G' services, powered by dual spectrum band of 900 MHz and 2,100 MHz, to deliver a better customer experience in 60 towns, including Guwahati, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Nalbari, Dhemaji.

"The launch of Platinum 3G...will enable us to deliver a superior voice and data experience. The roll-out is a part of Airtel's 'Project Leap' initiative," Airtel Chief Executive Officer (North East and Assam) Sameer Anjaria said at a press meet here.

The Platinum 3G does not require additional subscription and the existing 3G customers will automatically enjoy the upgraded service, he added.

The existing 3G service is offered at 2,100 MHz and with addition of 900 MHz, the Platinum 3G is likely to enhance the customer experience, he said.

On call drops, Anjaria said the company is "not getting permissions, mostly from general public" to set up mobile towers.

"It is because of the electro-magnetic radiation scare.

However, our Indian standards are more stringent than many other countries and these are absolutely safe," he added.

"We currently have over 5,000 towers in North East. To prevent call drops and improve service quality, we need some more towers at specific locations. We are in talks now," Anjaria said.

The CEO informed that Airtel is in talks with the state governments in the region for setting up towers in their properties to check call drops.

"The government machineries understand the problem and they are willing to help us. But the issue is we do not get government land in all the places where there is network issue," he added.

When asked about rolling out of 4G services inAssam, Anjaria said Airtel has already finalised acquisition of the required spectrum from Aircel and it is awaiting regulatory approval at the moment.

He, however, declined to specify any timeframe for launching the service.

Anjaria said Airtel enjoys around 45 percent market share in North East and 35 percent in Assam.

The size of the North Eastern market in terms of revenue is over Rs 5,000 crore with 2.8 crore subscribers. Airtel announced to invest Rs 60,000 crore across the country to implement 'Project Leap', a strategic initiative to improve its network quality.
