Airtel adds 2m mobile users in April

Bharti Airtel, India's top mobile phone operator, added 2.01 million mobile users in April, taking its total subscribers in the country to 183.3 million, data from an industry body showed on Friday.

Vodafone's Indian unit, which is the country's No. 3 mobile operator by subscribers, signed up 0.82 million mobile users in April to have a total of 151.3 million, the Cellular Operators Association of India said on its website.

The industry body does not provide subscriber additions data for No. 2 carrier Reliance Communications.

Fourth-ranked Idea Cellular added 1.49 million mobile customers in April to have a total of 114.2 million, while Telenor's India unit boosted its subscriber base by 1.12 million to 43.6 million.

Telecom operator Airtel tops in GSM mobile user net additions in April



Mobile operator Bharti Airtel is leading the Indian telecom market in terms of net addition of mobile users in April 2012.

The telecom giant added 2.01 million users, highest in April, taking its total subscriber base to 183.29 million.

According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), GSM telecom operators added 6.50 million subscribers in April, taking the total user base to 670.57 million. The GSM subscriber base was 664.08 million in March.

Airtel's market share stood at 27.33 percent in April.

Vodafone's market share is 22.56 percent. The mobile service giant added 0.81 million customers during the month taking its subscriber base to 151.28 million in April.

Vodafone, Airtel and Idea Cellular are expected to add customers significantly in May and June due to their revised 3G tariffs.

Idea Cellular has 17.03 percent market share. The Aditya Birla group company added 1.48 million new subscribers in April, taking its subscriber to 114.20 million.


Uninor, which has seen significant growth in user base in the previous months despite the 2G spectrum issue, added 1.12 million new customers in April. Its user base swells to 43.55 million in April.


Aircel added 1.01 million new users during the month to take its base to 63.58 million. Aircel lost customers in March.
