Leading European consumer electronics show IFA will take place from 31 August to 5 September 2012 in Berlin, with 3D and Smart TVs being the biggest points of interest.

With regard to the TV sector, the main topics at the show will be 3D, Connected TVs and Advanced TVs. At a global press conference held in Dubrovnik recently, Samsung announced that it is to introduce a touch and voice recognition TV set at the show.

Dr Rainer Hecker, chairman of the supervisory board of Gesellschaft für Unterhaltungs - und Kommunikationselektronik (gfu), stated: “Market growth, innovative technology and product trends have created a favourable environment for IFA 2012. This year one of the most important objectives for the industry and the trade in 2012 is to achieve a shift from the destruction of values to value orientation. IFA, as the leading marketplace and meeting point, can contribute to such a common understanding on the way to a general shift from the destruction of values to value orientation. As the industry’s most important hub and marketplace IFA can make a significant contribution towards realising a common aim, of rating added value over price.”

Commenting on current market developments, Jürgen Boyny, global director, Consumer Electronics GfK Retail and Technology, said: “Since 2010 the markets for consumer electronics and home appliances have been growing worldwide. Projections for 2012 forecast global growth in the order of 3-5%. This growth is taking place in emerging markets and is the result of innovation; in other words the products that are on show at IFA. Driving this growth are tablet PCs, smartphones and – less dynamically than in previous years – LCD TVs, along with LED TVs, 3D and Internet connectivity.”

Christian Göke, COO Messe Berlin, stated that “the fact that the world of consumer electronics and home appliances attracts 140,000 trade visitors and more than 6,000 journalists to Berlin is without parallel anywhere in the world. The story continues in terms of growth and dynamic innovation.”

Hall 11.1 will once again be a must-see stop on their tour of the fair as this is where IFA TecWatch displays the technologies for the markets of tomorrow. The exhibits cover a wide range of themes and include new display technologies and components, the 3D and Super HD solutions of tomorrow, a combination of virtual and real worlds (augmented reality) and the ‘cloud’, a place where numerous new applications ranging from entertainment to services meet.

Among the highlights is the ‘E-Haus’, a model of a fully networked home environment which, presented by the industry associations ZVEH, ZVEI and VDE, demonstrates life in the smart home. Visitors can find out what forward-looking technology is already capable of: energy saving, house surveillance, remote monitoring of important functions and easy control of various media. In addition to the exhibits on show, the IFA TecWatch Forum at the centre of the display hall features an outstanding and unique programme of presentations, papers and panel discussions.

Ever-larger TV screens with pin-sharp images in brilliant colour, 3D viewing, with and without glasses for TV sets, and computer monitors, as well, thin, lightweight, high-performance, fast ultrabooks, more and more CE, IT and telecom devices with network capabilities, for the home and on the move – these are the leading trends in the consumer electronics industry.
