A number of smartphone users of Lucknow were in fix after receiving a message urging to boycott the American messenger service, WhatsApp and instead chose Telegram, the ‘first Indian social media application’. Later they found that it was a fake message and there was nothing Indian about the suggested messaging application.

The message even bulldozed into the user’s emotions by urging to chose the Indian application and by doing so, be part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ mission.

"PM Modi ne naara diya hai 'Make in India'. Aaiye pehel karen, American Whatsapp ki jagah 'Telegram' ko apnayein. Akhir ye pehla bharatiya social media app hai,” read the message sent on users’ WhatsApp.

“One has to pay Rs 56 yearly for WhatsApp and there are around 20 Crore WhatsApp users in India. Quitting the application will save Rs 1,120 Crore from going out of the country. If the Chinese can boycott it and opt their application WeChat, then why can’t us,” the message further said.

Surprisingly the message was taken seriously some users, who downloaded the application-Telegram only to be shocked that that the message was fake.

“I downloaded Telegram immediately after getting the message. The Prime Minister’s call is for the right cause. Why promote an American application,” said Ashish Shukla, one of the victims. To his utter amazement, Shukla realized that there was nothing Indian about Telegram. In fact, Shukla said, Telegram was launched in 2013 by the Nikolai and Pavel Durov], of VK (social network), Russia's largest social network.

A major new update has been published for the Android app Telegram bringing a full redesign and Android 5.0 material design. Every screen of the app was updated to make it consistent with Android 5.0 design standards and animations. Support for the new standards was also added for older Android devices.

Along with the design update comes some new features as well with instant full text search allowing you to find any message sent or received. Developers promise that search is faster than what is offered in Gmail and other apps.

Users also get some new privacy settings including the ability to control the Last Time Seen notifications. It can be turned on for everybody, contacts only, or turned off. There is also a way to share that information only with specific people or to not share it with certain people.

Another new feature is the ability to set your account up for self-destruction. If you stop using Telegram and don’t login for six months, the account will be deleted. All messages, media, contacts, and any other data stored in Telegram will disappear. The self-destructing accounts can be set to destroy themselves in 1 month to 1 year. The updated app is available to download now.

Instant messaging app Telegram, which recently came under scrutiny for being used by the terrorist group Isis, has announced new features aimed at improving group conversations.

The encrypted messaging platform now allows as many as 1,000 people to be a part of the same group. The company says that the groups that have reached the capacity of 200 users, previous high limit, can now upgrade their group to "Supergroups" to add five times as many members.

The company in a blog post wrote that new members will be able to see the entire message history when they join the group. Deleted messages, however, will disappear for all members. These groups will be muted by default, and will send 'fewer' notifications about people who have joined or left the Telegram Supergroup.

In addition, Telegram now also allows a group to have multiple admins, and offers the ability to edit the name of the group, logo, and these newly appointed admins too can add or remove members.

The features are live on both Android and iOS clients. Telegram for Android, which has been updated to version 3.3, in addition also offers a 'Quick Share' button in channels, right next to each message.

Telegram for iOS on the other hand is getting in-app notifications, allowing a user who is talking to a person to respond to messages from other friends without leaving the current conversation thread. A user can send text or respond with a sticker, the company said.

As of May 2015, Telegram had 62 million monthly active users. The app is known for its sophisticated encryption technology. It still doesn't show ads to its users, has a desktop client, and is completely free to use.

WhatsApp big time rival, Telegram announced a new set of updates on Saturday for its Android and iOS apps which improve user experience by a great deal. The key features of the latest update include the ability for users to listen and record voice messages just by lifting their phone as if they were making a call, extra features for secret chat, improved privacy controls, sharing extensions, updated UI and a lot more.

Since its release in August 2013, Telegram has constantly been trying to take over the instant messaging market. It has been one of the major rivals to the Facebook owned WhatsApp which, most would say, is the king of IMs. While WhatsApp’s approach is to provide a clean and simple user experience, Telegram takes it all to the next level.

Over the span of a few months, we saw the company roll out updates like a flood which added support for support for inline bots, GIFs, cache clearing, introduced channels, shared links and a whole lot more.

The cross-platform messaging app’s latest update brings a few very interesting features in tow. Raise-to-speak and raise-to-listen are two of the most intriguing ones (counted as one feature, though).

Telegram’s voice messages can now be recorded and listened to by just raising your device to your ear as if you were making a call. The company says that this feature works well with most modern devices, but is still experimental, so there might be a few hiccups here and there. Apparently, this feature is the result of a well coordinated run between proximity sensors, gyroscopes and accelerometers.

You also get a completely new interface with waveform visualizations. New privacy features allow you to decide who may add you to groups and channels with granular precision. Supergroup creators also get more control. They can now change who may add new members to their group: all existing members or only selected admins. Supergroups can have up to 1000 members, and finding a balance between order and chaos is important if you want them to grow.

The messenger’s sharing extension has also gotten a refresh on iOS. You can now share any photo, video, audio, document or location to any Telegram chat or channel straight from default iOS apps like Contacts, Maps, Voice Memos and Photos. These messages can be sent to individual contacts, groups or even as broadcast messages.

iPad users get hotkeys support which will allow them to use an external keyboard to simplify navigation and other features and Android users get additional photo-editing tools which can help you rotate images and play with fade, tint and curves of images.

To top it all off, the company says that they’re not done with updates this month yet. Apparently we’ll be getting more treats in the days to come.

Telegram has become insanely popular over the past few months. This is evident from the fact that the company reported 12 billion daily messages in August, a jump from the 10 billion in the previously. Telegram, an encrypted messenger app that was launched two and half years ago, on Tuesday announced that it has hit the 100 million monthly active user milestone. Update v3.6 was also released for Android and iOS.
The company on its blog post additionally
claimed that 350,000 new users sign up every day on Telegram and that the app now delivers 15 billion messages on a daily basis. The company founder Pavel Durov also revealed the latest figures at the ongoing MWC 2016 trade show in Barcelona.
The firm is still quite some way away from other popular messaging apps, such as
Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, which currently sit on 800 million and 1 billion monthly active users.
Telegram additionally revealed that each day it gets over 400 million views a day on Telegram channels. It announced some new features for its Channels 2.0 and Bots, as part of update v3.6.
With Telegram v3.6, users can now copy links from the Quick Share menu to individual messages inside a channel. The links can be sent to people outside Telegram via other social networks. "Following such links will open the channel and highlight the message," says the company blog post.
For channel admins, Telegram will now let them send silent messages that will not notify their subscribers. Admins can simply tap on the "bell" icon on the chat text window to toggle it on or off. Furthermore, admins can enabled signatures in Channel Info. "New messages will be signed with the posting admin's chosen screen name but will not link to their profile," adds the post.
Like Slack, Telegram now also gives users the ability to edit their messages after it has been posted. The post however, can be edited a short while after they have been posted. A single tap on Android and double tap on iOS would let them edit the sent messages. The feature is available for both Supergroups and Channels.
The update includes easy sharing of links, pictures and videos received from Bots. Sticker previews now work 'everywhere' including sticker suggestions when users type an emoji and the 'Add Stickers' screen. Users can even tap on the sticker to preview it in full size before sending.
The updated Telegram Messenger app for Android and iOS is available to download from Google Play and App Store .
