Zaheer Khan retires from international cricket, to play IPL 9

India fast bowler Zaheer Khan announced retirement on Thursday, calling time on his illustrious international career spanning close to 15 years.

The veteran pacer announced his decision via a long post on his official Facebook page.

The 37-year-old pacer, who has played 92 Test matches, 200 ODIs and 17 T20 Internationals, however decided to be part of domestic cricket until the next Indian Premier League season.

"With immediate effect, I bid adieu to my career in international cricket. I look forward to signing off my last season in domestic cricket at the conclusion of Indian Premier League season 9," he wrote.

Zaheer is contracted with Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
Zaheer, who has been in and out of the team in the last three to four years due to recurrent injuries, admitted that his "shoulder may not last the rigours of bowling nearly eighteen overs a day".

In 92 Test matches, Zaheer has taken 311 wickets and is fourth highest wicket-taker in longer version amongst Indians after Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434) and Harbhajan Singh (417).

He played a major role in India's 2011 World Cup triumph with 21 wickets in the tournament which according to Zaheer was the biggest highlight of his 15-year career.

"My greatest cricketing moment was lifting the World Cup as part of team India and creating history. We played as a top team and being part of the journey of India as a top ODI side was very fulfilling," he said.

Earlier in the day, IPL chairman and senior BCCI functionary Rajeev Shukla confirmed about Zaheer's decision on Twitter. Shukla hoped the bowler continues to play the Indian Premier League.

"Zaheer khan to announce his retirement today My best wishes to him for post retirement carrier (sic)," Shukla tweeted.

"Hope Zaheer Khan will keep on playing IPL. Zaheer has been my most favourite bowler since 2002 when I was manager of team india on England tour," Shukla also tweeted.

Zaheer, who made his ODI debut with Yuvraj Sing way back in Kenya in 2000, has 282 wickets to his name. He has last played for India in August 2014 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. In T20Is, Zaheer has 17 wickets in his bag.

"Zak is Back is perhaps a headline that may come my way again, as I have every intention of giving back to this game and our wonderful country which gave this kid from Shrirampur the opportunity to chase and live his dream!" he signed off.
