Micromax ‘s subsidiary YU had announced that it will launch its next smartphone later this month. The company has now sent invites for an event scheduled on May 19. According to the invite, Yu plans to call its next device Yunicorn and it will apparently be “the phone that will redefine flagships”.

The invite reads, “Fantasy will soon become reality. Join us in the unveiling of the phone that will redefine flagships”. However the company has not revealed any features or specifications about the phone as yet.

Last week YU founder Rahul Sharma has posted a cryptic video on the company’s forums. “Excited to tell you all that our next device is round the corner and it’s nothing short of Incredible. It’s insanely beautiful and it will break some hearts. It will break records, it will break the conventional, it will break the rules…WAIT, it will break the flagships,” he had written.

In all likelihood, the Yunicorn could be a device codenamed YU5530, which was spotted a few days ago. It runs on MediaTek’s Helio X10 octa-core processor along with 4GB of RAM. The device is said to runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, which can be further upgradable to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Other details about the smartphone aren’t known as yet.

It remains to be seen whether YU still goes with Cyanogen OS or launches the Yunicorn with stock Android. Earlier this week Sharma had announced the end of YU’s exclusive partnership with Cyanogen in India, where he also stressed that Cyanogen OS was buggy and stock Android had more traction among users. YU had launched the stock Android versions of some of its smartphones.

It has been a while now that YU has launched a smartphone. YU’s last major release was the
YU Yutopia in December last year. The company had a low-profile launch for the Yureka Note last month, which features a 6-inch display and massive 4,000mAh battery. It is priced at Rs 13,499.
