After teasing it for days, Xolo finally launched its new Xolo Era 2X smartphone in India. Adding to the budget smartphone portfolio, the smartphone boasts a multi-purpose fingerprint sensor that offers more than simple unlocking of the device. Xolo Era 2X is a successor to the Era 2, which was launched in October last year at a price of Rs 4,999. However, it lacked a fingerprint sensor which is the key feature of the Era 2X.

In addition to a fingerprint sensor, the smartphone further improves in terms of camera and battery capacity. The Xolo Era 2X starts selling exclusively on Flipkart starting January 9, 2017, at a price of Rs 6,666 for the 2GB RAM variant and Rs 7,499 for the 3GB RAM model. The smartphone will be offered with Reliance Jio’s Happy New Year offer. It is available in color choices of Dark Gunmetal and Latte Gold.

Xolo Era 2X specifications and features

The Xolo Era 2 X features a 5-inch HD OnCell display offering 1280×720 pixels resolution. It is powered by a 1.2GHz 64-bit MediaTeK MT6737 quad-core processor coupled with 2GB or 3GB of RAM. The smartphone further includes 16GB of internal storage which can be further expanded via microSD card.

For smartphone photography enthusiasts, the smartphone features an 8-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus and LED flash. It also includes a 5-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calling. The smartphone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Keeping the phone ticking is a 2500mAh battery.

Connectivity options on the Xolo Era 2X include dual SIM support, 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, WiFi Hotspot, Bluetooth, GPS, and a micro USB port. The highlight of the smartphone is its fingerprint sensor which comes loaded with multiple functions. As claimed by the company, the fingerprint sensor which is layered in the rear panel of the smartphone can unlock it in 0.5 seconds.

Capabilities of a fingerprint sensor are usually restricted to unlocking and capturing pictures. However, the Xolo Era 2X boasts a sensor that also comes with features such as Tap to Secure and Tap to Talk. The sensor can be configured to up to five different fingers which can be attributed to carrying out specific actions such as locking the phone or securing the gallery or capturing a picture, etc. The Tap to Talk feature allows one to receive calls at the touch of the fingerprint sensor instead of swiping to receive the call.

At the given price, the Xolo Era 2X competes with budget smartphones boasting fingerprint security such as the Coolpad Note 3 Lite and Micromax Canvas Unite 4 Pro among others. The Coolpad Note 3 Lite is priced at Rs 6,999 and features a 5-inch HD display (720p). It is powered by MediaTek’s MT6735 64-bit quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz and paired with 3GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of internal storage which is further expandable via microSD card. It further sports a 13-megapixel f/2.0 rear camera with LED flash and a 5-megapixel selfie snapper. The Coolpad Note 3 Lite also features a rear fingerprint sensor. It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with CoolUI 6.0 running atop. It draws its juice from a 2,500mAh battery. Connectivity options include dual-SIM support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, USB OTG and Bluetooth.

The Micromax Canvas Unite 4 Pro , on the other hand, comes with a 5.0-inch HD (720p) IPS display and is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core processor coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage which can be further expanded via microSD card. It comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity options include dual-SIM support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. At Rs 7,499, the smartphone also comes with a rear fingerprint scanner.

In case, you are not too keen on having biometric security and want to look at other affordable options with better features then you can consider Xiaomi Redmi 3S (priced at Rs 6,999) or Redmi 3S Prime (priced at Rs 8,999). Both come with similar set of specifications, albeit a few differences — Redmi 3s has 2GB of RAM with 16GB of storage and the Redmi 3s Prime has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. One of the best-selling smartphones in 2016, Redmi 3s Prime also comes with fingerprint scanner, which is absent on the Redmi 3s. Compared to the Xolo Era 2X, the Redmi 3S comes with support for 4G VoLTE, features a 13-megapixel rear camera, and is powered by a 4,000mAh battery.
