Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi sold more than 3 million units of its low cost Redmi 3S series in the last six months, which was partly responsible for pushing the company to the No 2 position in the segment.
Xiaomi’s share grew three-fold to 10.7% in the quarter ended December 2016, compared to 3.3% in the same period last year. Sequential growth was 15.3% while Xiaomi expanded its retail presence with the launch of an exclusive model for offline channels.
The unprecedented success of the Redmi 3S series contributed majorly to Xiaomi’s growth this quarter. Continuing its online dominance, Xiaomi retained the top position in the online smartphone market in fourth quarter 2016, the agency added.
“Product is at the core of Xiaomi’s strategy, and a strong line-up of products with distinctive technological innovations has been critical in driving our India story,” Manu Jain, India managing director for Xiaomi, said Tuesday.
“This has been supported with robust operational growth through improvements in our online and offline sales structure, hiring of key talent, expansion of our customer care and after-sales service, and increasing our manufacturing capacity,” he added.
Xiaomi, which trails market leader Samsung, entered India in July 2014 and has since disrupted the smartphone industry with high-quality yet affordable devices, primarily in the sub-Rs 10,000 price category with its Redmi series. The 3 million units of Redmi 3S series include Redmi 3S, Redmi 3S Prime and Redmi 3S+, the latter was launched for offline markets before Diwali last October. All of Redmi 3S series devices are made in India, the company added.
