As expected, Xiaomi has today taken the wraps off its affordable Redmi 4 smartphone at an event in China. As the name suggests, the Redmi 4 is the successor to the Redmi 3s, which was launched earlier this year. Prices for the Redmi 4 smartphone starts from RMB 699 (Rs 7,000 approximately), and it is soon going on sale in China. There is however no word on when the devices will come to India.

As far as the design is concerned, Xiaomi doesn’t seem to have tweaked things by a lot. The overall design language will remind you of the Redmi Note 3 , and the Redmi 3s Prime. The differences though include the metal frame, a full HD display covered with 2.5D curved glass, which adds to the overall premium factor.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 price

The Redmi 4 is being launched in two variants. The affordable variant is priced at RMB 699, and it features a Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB onboard storage. The more expensive variant is priced at RMB 899 (Rs 8,800 approximately), and is features a Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB onboard storage.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 specifications

Except the processor, RAM and storage, the two Xiaomi Redmi 4 variants share most of the specifications and features. So you get a device with 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) with 2.5D curved glass IPS display, and a microSD card slot to expand the onboard storage up to 128GB.

In the photography department, the Redmi 4 is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and phase detection auto-focus (PDAF support). For selfie lovers, there is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The smartphone is backed by a 4,100mAh battery, which is the same as the Redmi 3s and Redmi 3s Prime.

There is a fingerprint scanner placed at the back, just below the primary camera. The usual connectivity options are present like dual-SIM card slots, 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. On the software front, the device runs on Android Marshmallow wrapped under MIUI 8 out-of-the-box.

To put these specs and features into context, the Redmi 3s Prime was launched in India earlier this year for Rs 8,999. The smartphone features a 5-inch 720p display, Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras, and a 4,100mAh battery. On the software front, it was launched with MIUI 7 wrapped under Android Marshmallow.

Looking at the specifications, the Redmi 4 seems to be an incremental update over the Redmi 3s Prime. Besides the slight tweak in the design, the major difference between the two smartphones is the bump in display resolution and processor. Where the Redmi 3s Prime was powered by a Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor, the new Redmi 4 is powered by a Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor.

If launched in India, the Redmi 4 at this price range will compete against the likes of the
Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus , LeEco Le 1s Eco and the Coolpad Note 5 to name a few. But, at the time of filing this story, there is no word on an India launch yet.
