Xiaomi had launched its flagship smartphone, Mi 5, in India in March this year. The company only launched the 32GB variant of the smartphone, which is available so far for Rs 24,999. Now, Xiaomi has hinted that the price of its flagship smartphone will be dropped. According to Xiaomi’s posts on social media, the company will be slashing price of the smartphone by Rs 2,000. After the price cut, the smartphone will be available for Rs 22,999. Xiaomi is likely to make an official announcement at 10am on mi.com/in and Flipkart.

The latest price drop comes days after Xiaomi had dropped the price of the Mi 5 by Rs 2,000 during its Independence Sale. After the sale, the price was back to original Rs 24,999. However the latest price cut could be permanent. Right now it’s not clear whether the new price be available on other e-commerce websites as well. It may be recalled that the smartphone was initially exclusive to mi.com , Xiaomi has later expanded the Mi 5′s availability to Amazon India, Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Tata Cliq.

As mentioned earlier, the Mi 5 is Xiaomi’s latest flagship smartphone. One of the talking points of the smartphone is front and back glass design and metal frame. The Xiaomi Mi 5 is also one of the first smartphones in India to come equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor. Later, premium smartphones like the LG G5 and HTC 10 also launched with the same processor.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Specifications

The smartphone sports a 5.15-inch full HD (1080p) display. It is powered Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chipset paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Unfortunately, there is no expandable storage option. On the camera front, the smartphone sports a 16-megapixel rear shooter with 4K video recording capabilities, four-axis OIS technology , PDAF, and dual-tone LED flash, and a 4-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calling.

Armed with a 3,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support, the smartphone also features a fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button. With connectivity options such as dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, IR Blaster, USB Type-C port and NFC, the Xiaomi Mi 5 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow wrapped under MIUI 7.

Despite being the flagship smartphone, the Mi 5 may not be best selling device for Xiaomi. The Xiaomi Mi 5 competes in the premium and mid-range segments while Xiaomi’s forte has been in the budget segment. The company has had a better run with its budget offering, the Redmi Note 3. According to a report, Xiaomi sold about 1.75 million units of the Redmi Note 3 within five months of the launch. According to IDC, the Redmi Note 3 has become the ‘highest-shipped smartphone ever online in India in any given quarter’. As per IDC’s research report, Xiaomi shipped 880,000 units of the Redmi Note 3 in India during the second quarter of 2016.

The company has now followed up the Redmi Note 3 with even more affordable Redmi 3s and Redmi 3s Prime smartphones. The Redmi 3s has already gotten rave reviews. Well, we will have to wait till 10AM tomorrow to see if the price drop will help increase in demands for the Mi 5 or not.
