MUMBAI: After recently renewing its contract with Ten Sports for five more years, sports entertainment company WWE is looking to grow other areas of its business beyond television.
One of these areas is licensing and merchandising.
WWE is looking at associating with products in new categories like mobile phones, watches and footwear.
WWE India MD Rukn Kizilbash said, “Our licensing agent in India is Dream Theatre.
We renewed their contract this year for two more years. We are happy with the progress being made. We work with them on a commission basis.
We are looking at products in new categories like mobile phones, watches and footwear. The number one category for us in India is the action figures made by Mattel. We will be launching a new range of apparel in October in stores.
Proline Exports is our apparel licensee. On the gaming front, we will be launching WWE 2k15.
We recently did a deal with Only Kidz to launch back-to-school packs and products”.
E-commerce is another leg of the plan. “Right now, we have a promotion with Flipkart. However, we are talking to different players for a long-term deal. E-commerce will be key as it reaches across the length and breadth of the country. People even in the small towns and cities buy our products.
We are working out details like pricing given that e-commerce offers discounts.”
The third leg of the plan is having WWE retail stores. But this will happen one or two years down the road.
“We have done research on the Indian consumer market. We feel that having our own retail stores will help.
We are currently working out the logistics as rentals can be very high. These will be metro-centric.”
