World number one Caroline Wozniacki's hopes of claiming the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati were ended on Wednesday by US wild card Christina McHale.
McHale, ranked 76 in the world, took three minutes shy of two hours to defeat the Dane 6-4 7-5.
Second seed Vera Zvonareva eased past fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-0 and fellow seeds Jelena Jankovic, Francesca Schiavone, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Shuai Peng also made it through.
Ana Ivanovic, the 15th seed, went down in straight sets to Nadia Petrova and 17th seed Yanina Wickmayer was beaten by Petra Martic. Daniela Hantuchova was a straight-sets winner over Flavia Pennetta.
