Djokovic top seed over Nadal at Wimbledon, Murray edges Federer

Wimbledon turned tennis upside down on Wednesday when Novak Djokovic was named top seed above world number one Rafael Nadal while defending champion Andy Murray was seeded three over seven-time winner Roger Federer.

The All England Club awarded top billing to 27-year-old Djokovic, the 2011 champion and 2013 runner-up, by using its controversial grasscourt weighting system in deciding its seeds instead of sticking by the ATP world rankings.

French Open champion Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon winner, is relegated from his world number one ranking to the second seeding after losing in the first round in 2013 and second round 12 months earlier.

Murray, who became Britain's first men's champion since Fred Perry in 1936 when he swept past Djokovic in last year's final, has been elevated to the third seeding despite a world ranking of five.

Federer, a shock second round loser to Sergei Stakhovsky in 2013 and who won the last of his seven titles in 2012, was handed the fourth seeding in line with his current ranking.

World number three Stan Wawrinka has never got beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon and that modest form is reflected in his seeding of five.

The women's seedings follow the WTA world rankings with five-time champion Serena Williams the number one followed by China's Li Na, Simona Halep of Romainia in third and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska taking fourth spot.

Maria Sharapova, the champion at Wimbledon 10 years ago as a 17-year-old, is seeded five.

Injured Nicolas Almagro Withdraws From Wimbledon

London: Spain's Nicolas Almagro has withdrawn injured from Wimbledon, tournament organisers confirmed on Thursday.

The 28-year-old clay-court specialist was named among the seeds on Wednesday and in his absence Canadian 23-year-old Vasek Pospisil is promoted into the top 32.

Pospisil becomes the 31st seed, ahead of Russian Dmitry Tursunov, who has lost in the first round in four of the last five years at the grasscourt tournament.

"Nicolas Almagro has withdrawn from the gentlemen's singles due to a foot injury," the Wimbledon referees office announced.

Almagro, ranked 26 in the world, reached the third round of the season's third Grand Slam four times.

Defending champion Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, the man he beat in 2013 to capture Britain's first Wimbledon title in 77 years, on Friday landed in the same half of this year's draw, leaving Roger Federer the biggest winner.

Murray, who has been seeded three, could face top-seeded Djokovic in the last four while seven-time champion Federer, the fourth seed, is scheduled to renew his rivalry with world number one Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.

But Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion, has been seeded second this year after losing in the first round in 2013 and getting knocked out in the second round 12 months earlier.

The 28-year-old Spaniard, who won a ninth French Open earlier this month, has already expressed fears over whether or not his famously brittle knees will stand up to two weeks of grasscourt tennis.

His mood will not have been helped by the draw which lined him up for a possible second round clash against big-hitting Czech Lukas Rosol who knocked him out in 2012.

Nadal starts against Slovakia's Martin Klizan with big-serving Ivo Karlovic a potential third round foe.

Murray, now coached by former Wimbledon women's champion Amelie Mauresmo, will start his title defence on Monday against Belgium's world number 104, David Goffin.

Murray could face a quarter-final against seventh seed Spaniard David Ferrer, who has been battling injury, or Queen's Club champion and 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov.

Top seed Djokovic, the 2011 champion, will meet Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan, also on Monday, with the Serb possibly facing France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round and former runner-up Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals.

Czech veteran Radek Stepanek, who beat Murray at last week's Queen's Club event, could be a second round opponent.

Federer and Nadal will begin their campaigns on Tuesday. Federer, looking to break free from his seven-title tie with Pete Sampras, opens against Paolo Lorenzi of Italy and could then face Julien Benneteau or Gilles Muller.

Qualifier Muller beat Nadal in the second round in 2005 while Benneteau had match points against Federer in the third round in 2012 before losing in five sets.

Women's top seed Serena Williams, a five-time winner, and Maria Sharapova, the champion in 2004, were drawn in the same quarter.

Sharapova, who beat Williams in the 2004 final to win her first major title, opens against British wild card Samantha Murray, while Williams is up against Anna Tatashvili of Georgia.

The other potential quarter-finals are French Open runner-up Simona Halep against Jelena Jankovic, former world number one Victoria Azarenka, just back from a three-month injury lay-off, playing Agnieszka Radwanska while 2011 champion Petra Kvitova could face Chinese second seed Li Na.

In the absence of defending champion Marion Bartoli, who retired after her victory last year, beaten finalist Sabine Lisicki of Germany will open play on Centre Court on Tuesday against Julia Glushko.

Somdev Devvarman faces tough opening clash in Wimbledon

London:
India's Somdev Devvarman has been pitted against 15th seed Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in the opening round of the men's sigles event in this year's Wimbledon.

Somdev, India's lone challenge in the men's singles, will have tough task at hand as he has landed in the same half of the draw along side fourth seed Roger Federer and fifth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland and ninth seeded American John Isner.

If Somdev manages to register an upset win in the first round, he will next face the winner of the match between Lleyton Hewitt of Australia and Poland's Michal Przysiezny.

But it is the men's doubles event where India had a significant presence.

Veteran Leander Paes and his Czech partner are seeded fifth and will open their campaign against Poland's Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Rajeev Ram of USA, while the eight-seeded Indo-Pak combination of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi will face Czech-Russian pair of Frantisek Cermak and Mikhail Elgin in the first round.

The other Indians in the men's doubles fray are young Divij Sharan and Purav Raja.

While Divij and his partner Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei will take on Jamie Delgado of Great Britain and Luxemborg's Gilles Muller in the opening round, Purav and Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner will play 15th seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal of Colombia and Poland's Marcin Matkowski.

Meanwhile, Sania Mirza and Cara Black have been seeded fourth and will face Swiss-Russian duo of Martina Hingis and Vera Zvonareva in their opening women's doubles encounter.

The draw for the mixed doubles event will be be held June 25.

Seven-times champion Roger Federer is through to his ninth Wimbledon final after a straight sets win over Milos Raonic.
