Internet giant Google is working at a spaceport in New Mexico to build and test solar-powered internet drones. According to the Guardian, the project is codenamed 'SkyBender'.
SkyBender is using drones to experiment with millimetre-wave radio transmissions, and this technologies could underpin next generation 5G wireless internet access.
Testing is reportedly going on at the Spaceport America airspace in New Mexico, using the solar-powered drones from Google Titan. The SkyBender is technically part of Google's air balloon Wi-Fi project aimed at a similar goal of bringing remote parts of the world online.
The Project Loon, a "cell tower in the sky" program uses high-altitude balloons to beam 4G LTE to people. Google had recently made a mysterious filing with the FCC for a nationwide airborne network, citing two years of testing in the 71-76GHz and 81-86GHz bands. The move is an attempt by the Google to compete with other social networking giants like Facebook to bring internet access to developing countries
