Arsene Wenger looks set to revive his interest in Werder Bremner defender Per Mertesacker according to reports in The Daily Mail.

Standing at 6ft 6in and boasting 75 caps, Arsenal had their eye on the Germany international a year ago.

Mertesacker now has less than a year till the end of his contract, and, despite having a price tag of approximately £9million, he could be let go for £6.5million.

While Wenger also has his sights on Everton's Phil Jagielka and Bolton's Gary Cahill, their respective £18million and £17million valuations are proving to be a big deterrent. This despite the Frenchman's recent claims that he is willing to pay £40million for "the right players".

The recently departed skipper Cesc Fabregas first joined the ranks at 17, but was shown the ropes by Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp.

Therefore if experience is the key factor, the scouting team fear that without the signing of a marquee player, the younger players are without the guidance of a skilled teammate.

With Samir Nasri looking likely to leave for Manchester City, Alex Song and Gervinho starting their three-match bans, and Kieran Gibbs and Johan Djourou suffering hamstring injuries, Wenger will have to struggle to make up the numbers against Liverpool on Sunday.
