The smartphones maybe hogging much of
the limelight, but the wearable space is
consistently growing. As per IDC,
companies shipped 21 million wearables in
Q3, 2015, which represents a staggering
197.6 percent year-on-year growth.
In Q3, 2014, companies shipped only
about 7.1 million units. Despite Apple ’s
entry into the wearable space, it is Fitbit
that continues to dominate. The company
shipped 4.7 million devices in this quarter,
which is double of what it shipped in the
same period last year. Despite the rise in
shipments though, the company saw its
market share drop from 32.8 percent to
22.2 percent.
Apple hasn’t yet revealed the number of
Apple Watches it has shipped or sold.
During the recent quarterly earnings , CEO
Tim Cook said that he didn’t want to give
competitors an inside track by revealing
the Watch numbers. That said, IDC
estimates that Apple shipped around 3.9
million Watches, thereby overtaking
Xiaomi to capture an 18.6 percent market
share.
Fitbit and Apple are followed
by Xiaomi that controls a 17.4 percent
market share having shipped 3.7 million
wearables. The Chinese company only had
one wearable in its portfolio, until recently
when it launched the Mi Band Pulse. The
next-generation activity tracker now also
features a heart-rate sensor.
The rest of the companies making up the
top-five companies include Garmin and
BBK, with the likes of Samsung having
been pushed further down.
