After launching the V3 and V3 Max, Vivo is all set to launch its next smartphone from the V series in India. Dubbed the Vivo V5, the smartphone will be launched on November 15. The company has already sent out media invites for the product launch, and also dropped hints about the selfie-focused features of the smartphone with a tagline ‘selfie evolution’. The Vivo V5 will be the company’s fifth smartphone from its V series, which also includes V1 and V1 Max.
With the growing trend of taking self portraits, smartphone makers are now paying more attention to the front camera with features like built-in beautification mode and front flash among others. Highlight of the Vivo V5 is said to be its 20-megapixel selfie camera. It is further said to feature a soft light LED flash in the front. The smartphone is expected to be priced around Rs 20,000. At this price point, the Vivo V5 will compete with the likes of Oppo F1s and Gionee S6s, recently launched selfie-centric phones. It will also compete with the powerhouses like the LeEco Le Max 2, Lenovo Z2 Plus, and the Moto Z Play; all of which are priced under Rs 25,000.
Vivo V5 specifications
The Vivo V5 is likely to boast a metal body design like its predecessors V3 and V3 Max . It is expected to feature a 5.2-inch full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. Under the hood will be 1.8GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor with Adreno 510 GPU and 4GB of RAM. The smartphone will further include 32GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 128GB via microSD card. Currently, there is no word if the smartphone will come in multiple choices of RAM or internal storage.
The Vivo V5 will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Akin to the previous V series models – V3 and V3 Max – the Vivo V5 will also house a fingerprint scanner, but this time it will be embedded in the smartphone’s home button rather on the rear. In tune with the growing demand for smartphones which support high-speed internet connectivity, the Vivo V5 will also come with 4G VoLTE support.
Coming to the highlight of the Vivo V5, at 20-megapixel, it will be one of the highest megapixel counts on offer in terms of a selfie camera. The Vivo V5 is further said to feature a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and Phase Detection AutoFocus (PDAF).
While there have been smartphones such as Huawei Honor 7 with 20-megapixel rear camera , Meizu MX 5 and Sony Xperia Z2 with 20.7-megapixel rear camera, they do not offer similar bump in the megapixel count when it comes to the front camera.
Currently, Oppo F1s claims to be the selfie-focused smartphone with 16-megapixel front camera with 1/3.1-inch sensor and an F/2.0 aperture for more light and wider frames. At Rs 17,990, the Oppo F1s comes with a 5.5-inch HD display, 1.5GHz 64-bit octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 13-megapixel rear camera and 3075mAh battery.
Also competing in the same category is the
Gionee S6s that features a ‘selfie flash’ which is in addition to the screen flash for its 8-megapixel front camera. Priced at Rs 17,999, the Gionee S6s offers a 5.5-inch full HD display and features 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6753 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 13-megapixel rear camera, and 3,150mAh battery.
The Vivo V5, on the other hand, is also rumored to come with a LED flash that could offer brighter results even in low light conditions. Finer details about the smartphone’s battery and connectivity are not known but given the 20-megapixel count on the front camera, the Vivo V5 is likely to give a tough competition to its contemporaries.
